Puple Gallinule

The Purple Gallinule is about the size of a chicken and brightly colored and likes freshwater with lilies, pickerel weed and other vegetation.
It lays 6-8 pinkish eggs with dark spots on a clump of grass or over the water.
The Purple Gallinule lives in Texas, Florida, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

As the Purple Gallinule swim or flies it will jerk its head from side to side. When in the water it walks on the lily pads. The Purple Gallinule doesn't fly at an extremely fast pace but it has been seen as far as California, Southern Canada, Bermuda and South Africa.

And By the way the white thing is a not a bovine animal, but that is where the Egret was sitting for the picture. Maybe he doesn't know he is a cattle egret.

Guessing Game.

There are perhaps thousands of birds. We cannot learn them all, nor could I ever do a post on every single one. So I will only do a few of the birds, then insects, and then some special dinosaurs.
But for a little while, we are going to play a guessing game.
I will give you some facts on a bird, and you try to guess what it is. The next day, I will do a picture of it and its name.
So the clues are:

• There are more then one kind of it's kind,
• Has long legs,
• A long yellow bill,
• Fluffy yellow plumes on it's head and neck,
• Stands about 2 feet tall,
• They enjoy being with cattle because cattle attack flies, and they eat flies,
• The kind that live in the marsh eat frogs fish and other aquatic animals.
• 3 hundred years ago, they lived only in Africa and Asia, but now live in North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
• And they have very pail blue eggs.

So those are the clues. See is you can figure it out.

The Sulfur-breasted Toucan.

For my next study, I am using 2 books. One is "Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day" and the other is a collection of books with all kinds of animals by Tangerine Press. The one I am using at present is called "Showoffs."
The books just have a bunch of animals with either a big beak or the monkey with the wild hair.
Well I really like them.
The Sulfur-breasted Toucan lives in Central to South America in forests.
It, like the Horn bill, seems to have bills that are too big. The toucan is about 20 inches from the tip of the bill to the tip of the tail, and it's bill is about a quarter of his length.
The Toucan's bill is useful for getting in to bushes and picking out berries.
Toucans are black, red, white and yellow. It's head is head is 2 shades of green, pink and yellow.
Why do you think a Toucan has so many colors?

I think they have colors so they can tell the differences in each other.

Well there are at least 35 different kinds of Toucan, and it pays to be different. The do not interbreed and this protects their colors.
